Guess What?

Yes, we are under construction. Rachel is exploring London and we are collaborating on new new new (good) things.

Look for our brand-new, refreshed site coming soon!

Daytrotter- Maps & Atlases

I’m a little behind on this one but, Maps & Atlases did a Daytrotter Session a couple of weeks back. The few songs they chose to do for the session (most of which are off their just released first LP, Perch Patchwork) are certainly less intense than the Maps & Atlases that I’m used to…

Download the session for free and listen for yourself on Daytrotter.

The Dustbowl’s 365 Day Celebration!

Loyal fans, friends, and stumblers, after 365 days of The Dustbowl we would first off like to thank you for your kind thoughts and support. For everyone who has helped out with this site including all of the contributing writers who took time out of their busy college lives to submit work, we applaud you.  Many thanks to the videographers that helped out on Skyway Sessions and Matt Cici for your countless direction and great attitude. And to those of you who kept us company during the hours upon hours of editing, we love you.

We would also like to extend our gratitude to the Twin Cities and all of the artists who inspire us to continue down this dusty trail of sharing what we feel most passionate about– music, film, and other facets of popular culture.

The Dustbowl will never be perfect, but we surely will try and we’ll always make allusions to old Death Cab songs as long as we’re able. We’re just two girls trying to remain conscious and hoping to shake every sleeping car we can.

To commemorate our one year anniversary, we’d like to share with you a playlist showcasing a mixture of artists we’ve reviewed in the past year along with some of our personal favorite songs. Thanks again and keep reading in 2010!

Broken Bells

The High Road

Something new is brewing in the world of side projects and collaborative art… James Mercer of  The Shins and Brian Burton (better known as Danger Mouse) have teamed up for a project they’re calling Broken Bells. From what I’ve heard of it so far, something good is happening.

Burton, under the stage name of Danger Mouse, has a pretty impressive list of accomplishments under his belt. Most notably might be his formation of the group Gnarls Barkley back in 2003 with rapper Cee-Lo Green (their song “Crazy” snagged the title of Rolling Stone’s Best Song of the Decade). He has also produced albums for artists such as Beck and Gorillaz. In 2004 he released The Grey Album,  blending together tracks from Jay-Z’s The Black Album and instrumentals from The Beatles’ The Beatles (aka The White Album).

Now, Burton is at it again, mixing his technical and production skills with Mercer’s dreamy vocals, which do not stray too far from what you’ll hear out of The Shins.

Head over to brokenbells.com and listen to “The High Road” the single from the up and coming album which drops on 9th March, 2009. I think it’s safe to say that this project has serious potential.

You may have heard, Maplewood’s Myth nightclub closed it’s doors today. Whether this shut-down is permanent or just temporary is uncertain at this point. Read more about it here.

Tiësto feat. Tegan and Sara

As I sit in the law library supposedly “working,” I figured I’d give you folks some good listening tunes for a Sunday or when you want to have a dance/trance party! Kaleidoscope is the new album from Tiësto, it features some of The Dustbowl’s favorite artists, including Priscilla Ahn, Cary Brothers, Nelly Furtado, and last but not least, Tegan and Sara. Check out their track called “Feel It In My Bones” via Stereogum.

In other news, Tegan and Sara recently announced that their latest album, Sainthood will be released 10/27.

Here are links to the album art via Tegan and Sara and a funny video from Chris Walla.

Ben Gibbard and Jay Farrar’s Ode to Kerouac

I’m proud to announce the latest news from the Death Cab for Cutie camp, Ben Gibbard and Jay Farrar (Son Volt) are putting out an album entitled One Fast Move and I’m Gone: Kerouac’s Big Sur on October 20th that parallels the work of Jack Kerouac in his 1962 novel, Big Sur. In addition to this wonderful news, a documentary (identically titled) will accompany the album. This project shouldn’t come as huge surprise for Death Cab fans who have heard Gibbard’s allusions to Kerouac’s work in songs like “Lowell, Ma” (Kerouac’s hometown) or the more recent “Bixby Canyon Bridge” (where Gibbard travels down to Big Sur to see if he can connect with Kerouac on some higher level). Here’s a great article from Paste too.

Here’s the track list via the official Death Cab for Cutie website

1. California Zephyr
2. Low Life Kingdom
3. Willamine
4. All In One
5. Breathe Our Iodine
6. These Roads Don’t Move
7. Big Sur
8. One Fast Move Or I’m Gone
9. Final Horrors
10. Sea Engines
11. The Void
12. San Francisco

Can’t wait to see them on tour. Maybe this gives hope for that long overdue Postal Service record we have all been waiting for.

What, something new from Sufjan?!

It’s been four years since Illinois and I think it’s safe to say that Sufjan Stevens fans are more than eager for something new. Luckily, we won’t have to wait too much longer. Set to release October 20th, 2009 is a multi-media set entitled The BQE (Brooklyn-Queens Expressway). Check out more details at Pitchfork. Quite possibly my favorite part about this whole thing, Sufjan is kicking it old school and including a View-Master reel inside the regular edition cover! Finally, something to replace my Land Before Time reels…

Not one, but two.

michael-jackson

It’s a sad day in the world of pop music. At age 50, Michael Jackson has died of a cardiac arrest at his home in Los Angeles. Details, right now, are still sketchy. He leaves behind three children and a legacy of chart-topping hits.

farrah_fawcett

In addition to Jackson, the world lost another icon today. Blonde bombshell and Charlie’s Angel, Farrah Fawcett sadly lost a three-year battle with cancer this morning. She was 62 years old.

Volcano Choir-Unmap

Jon Mueller, Chris Rosenau, Jim Schoenecker, Daniel Spack, Justin Vernon, and Thomas Wincek are teaming and calling themselves Volcano Choir for the just announced Jagjaguwar release, an LP entitled Unmap. Boasting a “backwoods gospel” sound and drawing from the influences of greats such as David Sylvian, Steve Reic, Mahalia Jackson and Tom Waits, Unmap is set to release September 22, 2009. Will the LP be this year’s Give Up? I guess we’ll have to wait until September to determine that.

Track List:

Husks And Shells
Seeplymouth
Island, IS
Dote
And Gather
Mbira In The Morass
Cool Knowledge
Still

MTV2 + Twin Cities + Soundset!

Today is day three of the Twin Cities take over on MTV2. It makes me really proud to live in the same city where talented, hard working musicians get recognized for their contribution to the independent music scene. MTV2 came out to Soundset last month and followed P.O.S, Atmosphere, Brother Ali, Tapes ‘n Tapes and the rest of Rhymesayers crew around. Check out the videos over at mtv.com. There is even a tour of Fifth Element. Represent, Represent, Represent!

MTV Unplugged: Adele

Like many great artists before her, Adele joins the MTV Unplugged elite. She performs five cuts off of her latest album, 19, including “Melt My Heart To Stone,” “Cold Shoulder,” “Right As Rain,” “Chasing Pavements,” and “Hometown Glory.” Watch for the really magnificent strings section in “Cold Shoulder.” Head on over to MTV to check out the performances!

Note: the article says that Rossi plays the violin. I was under the impression that she is a violist. Contrary to popular belief, they are two different instruments. Why do people not understand this? Shame, shame, Daytrotter…

Soundset 2009

Soundset 09

Canterbury Downs is synonymous with horse racing, Shakopee, and suburbia. Definitely not the place you would expect to find over 15,000 people intent on listening to independent hip-hop for 8 hours. That, my friends, is the beauty of Minnesota and Soundset.

Local label, Rhymesayers Entertainment, put on Soundset for the first time last year outside the Metrodome: urban Minneapolis being the perfect place to celebrate Twin Cities’ local artists. Thanks to a holiday weekend and America’s favorite pastime, the Twins took over the area and Soundset ’09 was relocated to Shakopee. Even with this switch, the crowds were massive and the acts were on it. If rhymes are candy and Soundset is a store, then thousands of fans were the proverbial kid. With over 30 artists, a B-Boy and B-Girl battle going on, tagging, and 3rd Lair skating it was easy to get lost in the music and the crowd. The Fifth Element Stage was home to friend of The Dustbowl, Kristoff Krane, as well as Heiruspecs, Cunninlynguists, Sims (from Doomtree fame), Blue Scholars, and many more. The Main Stage connected the coasts with Haiku D’Etat representing the West and Immortal Technique and Sage Francis reppin’ the East. Don’t fret, Midwest pride was strong with Brother Ali, P.O.S., Atmoshpere, and Eyedea & Abilities enchanting the crowd: all of it so very good. There’s a lot more to be said about Soundset but I’m personally very happy to have been introduced to Eyedea & Abilites and am looking forward to the drop of their new album, By The Throat, on July 21st. Rhymesayers and Soundset are definitely putting Minnesota, or as I like to call it Money$ota, on the hip-hop map.

Telekinesis– NEW “Awkward Kisser” Video

TK

Our favorite Michael Benjamin Lerner (aka Telekinesis!) has a quirky new music video out for “Awkward Kisser”.

A delightful blend of 50’s style sock hop and Lars and the Real Girl, “Awkward Kisseris one of my favorite songs off of Lerner’s latest album, Telekinesis. As if I don’t say this enough already, if you haven’t gone out and listened to (or purchased) his album yet, please do. It’s fantastic in its entirety.
